• In 2002, there were 21,362 apt fires in NY state, which caused 73 deaths; this was 65% of all residential fires

• In 1999-2001, smoking-caused fires resulted in 112 deaths; 25.5% of all fatal fire deaths

• Smoking was the cause of 5% of all residential fires in 1999-2001
